Saint Lucia: a veritable healthy haven

by | Jul 16, 2020 | Caribbean, Health & Wellbeing, Travel Safety | 0 comments

Continuing on with the COVID-19 and physical distancing theme, this month’s travel topic is Healthy Havens. Think of destinations where you can relax, rejuvenate and physically distance yourself. And in these COVID-19 times, destinations where you can feel safe with respect to your health. Saint Lucia: a veritable Healthy Haven, is one of the best Caribbean islands where you can do just that. With all the health and safety protocols they have put in place before opening up their country to international travel earlier in July, you should definitely put Saint Lucia on your travel bucket list if health, wellness and safety are a prime concern. Find out why below.

What makes Saint Lucia Healthy Haven?

Saint Lucia is one of the best places in the Caribbean for you to relax and rejuvenate, to connect with nature, get the blood pumping and to physically distance yourself. As a result of the current pandemic, this last feature is something that many people, like yourself, are now looking for when planning future vacations for when we can travel again.

Health and Safety Travel Protocols

Saint Lucia has had a very low number of COVID-19 cases (22 to date) and no deaths. Its medical health care system did a fantastic job, and the country has been able to open its borders to international travel again. Not only that, but the ministry of health and wellness has devised and implemented several health and safety related travel protocols to protect both Saint Lucians and visitors to the country during phase 1 of its return to tourism.

I won’t go into all the details of the health and safety travel protocols here, but when you arrive in Saint Lucia, you will feel safe in the knowledge that the whole country has implemented them. Since the country relies heavily on tourism, you can be assured that all staff in the tourism industry, from the airport right through to the hotels, public transportation, tour operators and many other service providers that you will use while on your vacation, have been fully trained in the new health and safety protocols.

An Ideal Destination to Relax and Rejuvenate

That said, even before COVID-19 hit, Saint Lucia was already a veritable healthy haven, an ideal destination for relaxing and rejuvenating, for adventure, and connecting with nature. It’s not just for romance which Saint Lucia is well known for.

On a visit to the island, you’ll discover lush tropical rain forests where you can get your blood pumping ziplining through the trees. You’ll find beautiful beaches and bays where you can go for a relaxing swim or snorkel among the warm corals. Of course, there are the famous Piton mountains where you can go for an adrenaline hike with a view. The island also has diverse flora and fauna, including six endemic species of birds (the highest number in the world) for you to discover. But what you may not know about is the drive-in volcano, the only one in the world, that offers an abundance of health and wellness oppotunities.

Soufriere Sulphur Springs Drive-in Volcano

Part of The Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO world heritage site, a tour of Soufriere’s drive-in volcano and its Sulphur Springs is a must do experience on a visit to Saint Lucia, especially if you’re looking for a health and wellness experience.

The healing waters of Soufriere, known as Sulphur Springs locally, have been used since 1784, when the French King, Louis XVI, first introduced health and wellness to Saint Lucia with the construction of 12 large stone baths for his soldiers.

The curative properties of the water in the sulphur springs were considered to be similar to those at Aix-les-Bains in France (which coincidentally is close to where my brother lived for a while).

At this geothermal wonder, you can enjoy the healing properties of the Sulphur Springs for yourself including a therapeutic mud bath, bathing in one of the restored stone baths, and rejuvenating under a cascading waterfall.

Resorts offering Natural Spa Treatments

In addition to this natural spa, many resorts in Saint Lucia offer health and wellness activities and spa treatments, using indigenous ingredients, such as volcanic minerals and rainforest flora, or all-natural, organically grown ingredients of the purest quality. There’s even a resort that caters solely to adults who are looking for health, wellness and well-being, where you can indulge in aromatherapy, various massages, Ayurvedic treatments, wraps and yoga. Some even offer personal trainers.

Ideal for Solo Travellers, Couples, Gal Pals, Family or Social Bubbles

If you have a passion for health and wellness, Saint Lucia is the ideal destination. If travelling safely in a post-COVID-19 world is a priority, this healthy haven is also an ideal destination. With so much to offer, it’s an ideal destination for solo travellers, couples, and small groups.

While Canada still has a global travel advisory for non-essential travel (at the time of writing), when you are ready to travel again, as a Saint Lucia Destination Specialist, I am here to help you plan your health and wellness vacation in this healthy haven.

Whether you’re looking to relax and rejuvenate at a wellness resort on your own, with your partner, gal pals, family, or your social bubble, I am here to guide you. Whether you want to fully immerse yourself in the Saint Lucian culture, explore the island on a self-driving tour, get your blood pumping on an active adventure, or a combination of all of the above, I can help with all the plans.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Popular all year, the best time to visit Iceland is literally any time. It really depends on your travel goals and what you want to see, do and experience while in the land of fire and ice.

For instance, if your goal is to see the Northern Lights, the best time to visit is during the winter months when the nights are long and, on a clear night, the Aurora Borealis puts on a show. If you want to explore the entire island, then the summer months are the best. But what if you want to avoid crowds? Read on…
