Pico – a volcanic island in the Azores
Another volcanic island to put on your travel bucket list…Pico Island in the Portuguese Azores.
Like São Miguel, which I posted about last week, Pico is another volcanic island that you can see/visit on an Iberian and Azores Cruise, or on a Transatlantic Cruise, but for a truly immersive experience, you’ll want to stay for a few days and tour the island, especially if you love volcanic landscapes, Portuguese history, culture, and architecture, beaches with spectacular mountainous backdrops, and of course Portuguese cuisine.
Ponta do Pico, the volcano that dominates the island, is not only the highest mountain in the Azores, but also Portugal. It is also the highest elevation of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Don’t worry, the volcano is dormant, but at 2351 metres high, it makes for some great hiking…even at lower levels…and of course stunning views.
